Crabby Crayons~ The "Art" of Working Together!

One of my favorite activities to do at the beginning of each year is to read the story The Crayon Box that Talked by Shane Derolf. The kids really make connections to the crayons and how they don't get along and it makes them "Crabby Crayons".  In the end, the clever girl who bought the irritable box of crayons helps them discover, through creating a cooperative masterpiece, that working together is fun! As a follow up activity, we create a class cooperative crayon collage! Each child gets a crayon die cut to glue different colored items on. We practice using glue... "Dot-Dot Not A Lot" we always say... The children really enjoy making the collages and when they see the crayons all together it helps reinforce the positive message we reflected on after reading this community building story.
