Just finished another activity for use with my Foam Alphabet Blocks. The goal for this activity is to have the children sort the letters by shapes... "Which are straight and which are curvy?"  This activity helps children really notice the details and differences in letters, which helps build letter recognition. According to Gay Su Pinnell and Irene C. Fountas, authors of  Literacy Beginnings: A Prekindergarten Handbook , "Readers see letters as different from one another, but to young children, they may look pretty much alike-a lot of black sticks and curves. The child must learn to notice the distinctive features of a letter: what makes it different from ever other letter."
